University of Sydney main quadrangle with Gothic sandstone architecture and green lawns

Founded in 1850, the University of Sydney is Australia's oldest university and one of its most recognisable institutions globally. Its main quadrangle — a sandstone Gothic building that could easily be mistaken for an Oxford college — sits at the heart of a campus that has educated prime ministers, Nobel laureates, and generations of Australia's professional class. For international students, the University of Sydney offers something distinct from its Sydney neighbour UNSW: a deeper tradition in medicine, law, architecture, and the humanities, housed in one of the most architecturally distinguished campuses in the Southern Hemisphere, four kilometres from the CBD.

This guide covers everything — programs, tuition, entry requirements, scholarships, campus life in Sydney's inner west, and what a University of Sydney degree means for your post-study visa and permanent residency pathway.

Rankings and reputation

The University of Sydney ranks #18 in the QS World University Rankings 2026, placing it in the global top 20 — just one position ahead of UNSW Sydney (#19) and five behind the University of Melbourne (#13). In Australia, only Melbourne ranks higher.

USyd's subject-level rankings reflect particular strength in professional and creative disciplines:

SubjectQS Subject Ranking 2026
Architecture and Built EnvironmentTop 15 globally
MedicineTop 20 globally
LawTop 25 globally
EducationTop 30 globally
Pharmacy and PharmacologyTop 40 globally
Accounting and FinanceTop 50 globally
Engineering and TechnologyTop 60 globally
Computer ScienceTop 70 globally

For students targeting medicine, architecture, law, or education, USyd's subject rankings are the strongest of any Australian university in these fields. For engineering and computer science, UNSW Sydney has a slight edge at the program level, though both are globally competitive.

What makes USyd different

Australia's oldest institution — and what that means

The University of Sydney's founding in 1850 predates the establishment of most Australian institutions by decades. This longevity has produced three things that matter practically for international students:

A research legacy. USyd has accumulated Nobel laureates, political leaders, and sector-defining researchers across its 175-year history. Its research centres — the Brain and Mind Centre, the Charles Perkins Centre for obesity and chronic disease research, the Sydney Nanoscience Hub — produce work that appears in top global journals and attracts industry partnerships that benefit students through research programs and graduate employment networks.

A professional alumni network. A university that has been producing graduates for 175 years has alumni in senior positions across Australian law firms, hospitals, government, and corporations. USyd's professional network is particularly deep in medicine, law, architecture, and the public sector — all fields where connections to practitioners matter during the graduate job search.

A campus of genuine beauty. The Quadrangle — USyd's centrepiece building — is the most photographed university building in Australia. Its sandstone Gothic architecture, open courtyards, and carved stone detailing give the Camperdown campus a visual character that UNSW, Monash, and most other Australian universities do not have. This is not irrelevant — students who care about the environment in which they spend three or four years will find USyd's campus meaningfully different from more modern institutions.

Strong in medicine, law, and architecture — fields where it leads

USyd's three most distinguished fields nationally — medicine, law, and architecture — have produced the institutions and practitioners that define these disciplines in Australia.

The Sydney Medical School is Australia's oldest medical school and consistently produces the highest volume of practising doctors of any Australian institution. The graduate-entry Doctor of Medicine (MD) is a four-year program for students who have completed a relevant bachelor's degree.

The Sydney Law School is one of Australia's top three law schools, with alumni networks spanning the High Court of Australia, major commercial law firms, and international law organisations. The Juris Doctor (JD) program is available to graduates of any bachelor's degree — not only law undergraduates.

The Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning at USyd ranks in the global top 15 in QS subject rankings — higher than any other Australian architecture school. Its programs span architecture, urban design, project management, and urban planning.

ℹ️ USyd has direct-entry undergraduate engineering — unlike Melbourne

The University of Sydney offers the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) as a direct-entry four-year undergraduate program. This is an important distinction from the University of Melbourne, where engineering is primarily delivered at postgraduate level (requiring a bachelor's degree plus a two-year Master of Engineering). For students from Korea, India, and China where engineering is traditionally an undergraduate qualification, USyd's structure is more familiar — and costs one year less in total study time than the Melbourne pathway.

Campus and location

Camperdown and Darlington campuses

USyd's main campus spans Camperdown and Darlington, approximately 3.5 kilometres from Sydney's CBD. The campus is significantly closer to central Sydney than UNSW's Kensington campus (7 kilometres) — a practical difference that shows in commute times, access to Sydney's inner-city culture, and proximity to the CBD job market.

Key campus landmarks:

  • The Quadrangle (Main Building) — USyd's Gothic sandstone centrepiece, built from 1854; the most photographed university building in Australia
  • Fisher Library — one of Australia's largest research libraries; open 24 hours during examination periods
  • Seymour Centre — performing arts venue; regular student and professional productions
  • Charles Perkins Centre — flagship research building; interdisciplinary health research hub
  • Manning Bar — the student bar and live music venue; historic social centre of student life
  • Sydney University Village — on-campus student accommodation

The Camperdown campus connects directly to Redfern Station (Inner West Line, T2) and Central Station by bus, giving students fast access to the CBD, the eastern suburbs (via train), and inner-west suburbs. The light-rail connection to Circular Quay and Parramatta is accessible from Central.

Inner west Sydney — living near USyd

USyd's surrounding suburbs — Camperdown, Newtown, Glebe, and Chippendale — form one of Sydney's most culturally distinctive student precincts. It is a different lifestyle from the eastern beach culture near UNSW; inner west Sydney is better known for live music, independent coffee shops, vintage stores, and a creative and bohemian atmosphere that has attracted artists, academics, and students for generations.

SuburbWalk to CampusWeekly Rent (shared room)Character
Camperdown5–10 min walkAUD $340–$440Adjacent to campus; student-dense
Glebe15–20 min walkAUD $290–$380Leafy, established; student-friendly

Redfern15–20 min walkAUD $320–$430Close to Central; more urban
Surry Hills25 min busAUD $370–$500Inner city; restaurants; more expensive

Newtown is the suburb most associated with USyd student culture. King Street (Newtown's main strip) has some of Sydney's best independent cafés, Thai restaurants, vintage clothing stores, and live music venues — a completely different atmosphere from Kingsford near UNSW. For students from Northeast Asia who want to experience a distinctively Australian urban culture alongside their studies, Newtown is one of the most genuine environments in Sydney.

Access to Chinese, Korean, and Indian communities

USyd's inner west location is not the primary hub for Asian communities in Sydney — those are concentrated in Chatswood (Chinese), Strathfield/Eastwood (Korean), and Harris Park/Parramatta (Indian), all accessible by train or bus from Central Station (15–30 minutes). Students can access these communities easily without living in them directly.

Living costs near USyd

Miscellaneous$150–$200Personal care, transport variations
Monthly Total$2,360–$3,190
Annual Total$28,320–$38,280

USyd's inner west location places it in the mid-range for Sydney living costs — meaningfully cheaper than UNSW's eastern suburbs but more expensive than studying in Melbourne or Adelaide. The quality of the immediate neighbourhood compensates for the cost premium for most students.

Post-study outcomes

The Go8 four-year post-study visa

All University of Sydney graduates — undergraduate and postgraduate — receive the four-year subclass 485 post-study work visa as Go8 university graduates. This is the same duration as Melbourne, UNSW, and the other Go8 universities.

Graduate employment and salaries

USyd's graduate employment is particularly strong in law, medicine, architecture, and the public sector — fields where the university's alumni networks and institutional reputation open doors that would otherwise take longer to access.

FieldAverage Starting Salary (AUD, Sydney)
Medicine (first RMO year)$80,000–$95,000 (award rate, NSW Health)
Law (junior solicitor, commercial firm)$80,000–$115,000
Engineering (bachelor's, graduate)$75,000–$88,000
Architecture (graduate)$65,000–$78,000
Computer Science$72,000–$88,000
Commerce / Finance$67,000–$82,000

USyd's medicine and law graduates feed directly into NSW Health training programs and Sydney's major commercial law firms — career pipelines that are genuinely stronger at USyd than at many other Australian institutions.

PR pathway from USyd

The Go8 four-year post-study visa gives USyd graduates the same extended window as all other Go8 universities for state nomination and SkillSelect participation. For NSW-based nurses, engineers, and IT professionals, New South Wales state nomination (subclass 190) is available — though competitive relative to South Australia or Queensland nomination programs.

Frequently asked questions

What is USyd better at than UNSW? USyd's clearest advantages over UNSW are medicine, architecture, law, and the humanities. The Sydney Medical School, Sydney Law School, and the Faculty of Architecture are among Australia's best in their respective fields. For students targeting these disciplines specifically, USyd is the stronger choice in Sydney. For engineering technology and computer science, UNSW has a slight programmatic edge.

Is the Quadrangle really as impressive as Oxford? It is visually striking and genuinely beautiful — a sandstone Gothic quadrangle with carved stonework and colonnaded walkways that would look at home in Oxford or Cambridge. It is one of Australia's most architecturally significant buildings and one of the most photographed university campuses in the Southern Hemisphere. Whether it is "as impressive" is a matter of personal taste, but it is genuinely distinctive in the Australian context.

How close is USyd to Sydney Harbour and the beaches? The Camperdown campus is approximately 7 kilometres from Sydney Harbour by road and 9–10 kilometres from Bondi Beach. Both are accessible by public transport in 20–40 minutes. Unlike UNSW (which is close to Coogee and Maroubra beaches), USyd is more naturally oriented toward inner-city culture than beach lifestyle. Students who want the beach lifestyle typically prefer UNSW; students who prefer inner-city culture and proximity to the CBD typically prefer USyd.

What is the University of Sydney Village accommodation like? Sydney University Village (Darlington) provides on-campus accommodation in modern apartment-style buildings. Costs run approximately AUD $350–$500/week depending on room type, with some options including meal plans. Village places are allocated on a first-come basis and prioritise first-year international students. Apply immediately after accepting your offer — places fill well before the academic year begins.

Does USyd accept PTE instead of IELTS? Yes. PTE Academic is accepted at USyd for all programs. The standard requirement of PTE 58 is equivalent to IELTS 6.5. Medicine and Law programs require PTE 65 (equivalent to IELTS 7.0). PTE results are available within 48 hours, which can be advantageous for students working against application deadlines.
